Cadillac Races Into F1: GM's Bold Move for 2026 Championship
GM Ventures into Formula 1 with Cadillac Brand
General Motors (GM) is set to mark its entry into the Formula 1 championship with its iconic Cadillac brand. The automaker has made evident its intentions to join the FIA Formula One World Championship for the 2026 season. On Monday, the automaker announced a forward motion with Formula 1, who accepted the GM and Cadillac application in principle, to become the 11th team participating in the world-renowned grid. This marks the first new team introduction since 2016.
Collaborations and Future Prospects
Discussions have been underway between GM, Formula 1, and motorsport company TWG Global regarding GM's prospective entry. The talks followed a commercial assessment and decision made by the organization in January. As part of these developments, GM is anticipated to join as an engine supplier in the future. However, initial reports indicating that GM might initially join as a Ferrari customer have yet to be officially confirmed.
Benefits and Impact for GM and Formula 1
The introduction of a Formula 1 team is expected to aid GM’s progress in driving advancements in transportation. This includes leveraging novel electrification, powertrain, software, and internal combustion engine technology that will be available to global consumers. The move will provide a platform for the Cadillac brand to attract a diverse international audience and showcase GM’s technology and design prowess.
Greg Maffei, CEO of Liberty Media, the owners of Formula One Group, expressed confidence in the prospective venture. He regarded GM as a potential power unit supplier that could add value and interest to the sport. Furthermore, he commended GM and Cadillac as an “impressive US brand.”
The collaboration has also attracted high-profile attention, with the last US F1 champion, Mario Andretti, joining the team’s board of directors.
