A Potential Partnership in the Making

Following recent reports by the Wall Street Journal, it has been suggested that Qualcomm, a dominant player in the chip industry, has expressed interest in acquiring the beleaguered Intel Corporation. This news sparked a surge in Intel's stock price, with an increase of over three percent noted in the American market. Intriguingly, the figure even escalated to over nine percent momentarily.

Recent Struggles of Intel

Intel, formerly a luminary in the chip sector, is sadly currently reeling under substantial losses. Despite its storied history, it does not hold any significant position in the smartphone business and is struggling to challenge Nvidia in new artificial intelligence chip applications. In addition to this, Intel is also facing an onslaught in the PC market as well as the data center chip space. To adapt to these circumstances, Intel has been imposing cost-saving measures, such as delaying the construction of a chip factory in Magdeburg by a prospective two years.

The Probable Synergy of Qualcomm and Intel

Qualcomm excels in the production of modems and processors for smartphones and has also been tapping into the PC market. Noted industry analyst, Patrick Moorhead from Moore Insights, in an interview with CNBC, has expressed belief in the potential synergy of Qualcomm's and Intel's business operations. He acknowledges minor overlap in their spheres of operation and technical platforms, rendering a merger potentially beneficial. However, such a deal is predicted to warrant a comprehensive inspection by competition watchdogs.

Shedding light on the recent market trends, Intel's market valuation has slumped more than 50 percent since the concluding part of 2023. Contrarily, Qualcomm's worth recently climbed, making it valued at nearly double that of Intel, after its share price surged around a fifth this year. Qualcomm shares, however, closed almost three percent lower as per the Wall Street Journal report.
