Sophie Turner in Talks to Star as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider Series

The tomb may have found its raider in the rising star, Sophie Turner. Reports from Deadline hint that the "Game of Thrones" veteran is in serious negotiations to take the mantle of Lara Croft for the forthcoming "Tomb Raider" TV series on Prime Video.

Emerging As Lara Croft Among Strong Contenders

The news follows a late October exclusive from the same publication, which had identified Turner as a front-runner for the esteemed role. Lucy Boynton (“Bohemian Rhapsody,” "The Pale Blue Eye") and Mackenzie Davis ("Station Eleven") alongside Emma Corrin ("The Crown") were also reported as potential candidates. However, the latest buzz suggests that the series, under "Fleabag" creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge's expert creation, may have locked in its titular character.

The casting news remains unofficial and pending confirmation from the series, suggesting Turner may still be in the negotiation phase. Following the footsteps of megastars Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, who have previously brought Lara Croft to life in live action, comes with plenty of expectations and attention. Several names, including Daisy Ridley, Jodie Comer, and MCU's Hayley Atwell—who voiced Lara Croft in the 2024 animated series "Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft"— have also surfaced in fan-based casting discussions.

Turner's Potential to Uphold the Lara Croft Mantle

Despite speculations, there are solid reasons to believe Turner is suitably equipped for the task. Her character transformation from a naïve princess desiring to wed the loathed Prince Joffrey to a quick-witted survivor in "Game of Thrones" exhibits the breadth of her acting prowess. Turner's Sansa Stark character has shown how quickly she can adapt and navigate through a complexity like King's Landing, all while outsmarting her foes.

Turner's growth as an actor paralleled her on-screen journey. Her trajectory from fragile to formidable over the seasons only reinforces her potential as the new Tomb Raider, Lara Croft. Post "Game of Thrones," Turner's choice of diverse roles, from her comic cameo in Netflix's "Do Revenge” to the layered character in the HBO drama "The Staircase," and ITV's "Joan" indicate her desire to explore unconventional characters.
