Google Messages Expands Encrypted RCS Group Chats to a Wider Audience

In a move towards greater security, Google Messages has expanded the availability of end-to-end encrypted RCS group chats to a larger number of users. Initially rolled out to beta testers in December last year, the feature now extends to the stable channel, leveling the playing field with messaging giants like Signal and WhatsApp.

Once limited to one-on-one Android chats, end-to-end encryption now extends to group conversations, providing an added layer of privacy for users. To access this feature, users may need to update to the latest version of the Messages app. Although Google has yet to make an official announcement, the rollout is expected to be widespread.

This development marks a significant step in Google's ongoing efforts to ensure user privacy and protect conversations from third-party interference. However, it is important to note that the encryption technology, which relies on RCS, remains incompatible with iOS users due to Apple's resistance to adopting the standard. As a result, messages sent to iPhone users will not be encrypted.
