Netflix Bids Farewell to its DVD Legacy, Ending 25-Year Journey

Recommended Posts

In a nostalgic farewell to its origins, Netflix announced that it will be discontinuing its DVD service on September 29th, concluding a 25-year journey. The company that began by shipping DVDs through the mail has evolved into a streaming giant, making the decision to close DVD.com.

Netflix shared in a blog post, "After an incredible 25-year run, we've decided to wind down DVD.com later this year." As the DVD rental business continues to shrink, providing top-notch service to members has become increasingly challenging. The company acquired the DVD.com domain in March 2012, shortly after reversing a plan to split its DVD-by-mail service into a separate entity called Qwikster.

With over 5.2 billion DVDs shipped since its inception, Netflix marked its first-ever shipment as a copy of Beetlejuice on March 10th, 1998. The most popular movie? The Blind Side. The announcement comes just before the company's Q1 2023 earnings report.

I can see their reasoning. We got DVDs at times when we had Netflix but it was just easier to find something on Streaming. Now with even more Streaming services, DVDs are becoming a bit obsolete. We still get them from the library as they are free versus having to subscribe to several services but I'm surprised Netflix let it go for so long.
