The fumble-through-the-end-zone rule must go (but it likely never will)

Recommended Posts

From profootballtalk:

TL;DR: The fumble-through-the-end-zone rule in football is widely seen as unfair and arbitrary. When an offensive team fumbles the ball into and out of the end zone, the defense gets possession on their own 20-yard line. It doesn't make sense because the defense hasn't done anything to earn possession, and it punishes the offense too severely for a simple mistake. The rule is rarely discussed for change because it hasn't affected any major postseason games. Unless it negatively impacts a Super Bowl outcome, it's unlikely to be revised. The best solution would be to give the offense the ball at the spot of the fumble, while a compromise could be giving the defense possession at the fumble spot instead of the 20-yard line. However, don't expect a rule change anytime soon as it may take many years before it occurs in the Super Bowl.
