A Revolutionary Step for Connectivity: Starlink Mini
Satellite Internet corporation, SpaceX, has once again pushed the boundaries of technology by broadening the reach of their Starlink service. Previously available to sea vessels, planes, van-livers, rural residences, and even communities in the Amazonian region, this groundbreaking tool is now going to be available to backpackers as well. Enter the game-changer: the compact, DC-powered Starlink Mini.
The Starlink Mini is approximately the size of a chunky laptop and ingeniously incorporates the Wi-Fi router directly within the dish. Despite consuming less power compared to other Starlink terminals, this new piece of tech boasts impressive connectivity speeds exceeding 100 Mbps. As SpaceX CEO Elon Musk gushed on X, setting up the device takes less than five minutes.
Efficiency and Portability: The Magic Formula
The efficiency of the Starlink Mini, primarily due to its relatively lower power consumption, is truly remarkable. Compared to the power range of 33-62W from the Standard Actuated dish and separate AC-powered Wi-Fi router from two years ago, the Mini kit requires an average of just 20-40W. This means that the Mini dish could be powered for two to three hours using a large power bank that you might already possess.
The physical dimensions and weight of the Mini also contribute to its portability. With measurements of 11.75 x 10.2 x 1.45 inches (298.5 x 259 x 38.5mm) and weight of just 2.43 pounds (1.1kg), or 3.37 pounds (1.53kg) inclusive of the 49.2 foot (15m) DC power cable and kickstand, the Mini is convenient to carry. Being IP67 rated, the dish is protected against dust, rain, and brief immersion in water, making it a robust companion for outdoor escapades.
Pricing and Availability: The Starlink Mini Experience
In the US, the Starlink Mini is available as an add-on to residential plans, at least for now. For an additional cost of $599, which is $100 more than the standard dish, existing customers can experience the novelty of the Mini through the Mini Roam service for an additional $30 per month. Starlink Mini users are entitled to up to 50GB of mobile data monthly, with the opportunity to purchase more at the rate of $1 per GB.
Although still fresh in the US, the Starlink Mini has already made its debut in countries like Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Panama. It can be bought along with Mini Service or Mobile - Regional Service plans, and does not impose any restrictions on data or speed. However, usage in motion or on the ocean is prohibited.
SpaceX’s expansion plans don't stop here; they intend on reaching more markets over time. The company is dedicated to reducing the cost of Starlink, especially for those regions where connectivity is a luxury or entirely non-existent. The Starlink Mini is indeed a game-changer, and this is just the beginning of more to come.
