U.S. Aims Fingers at TP-Link Over National Security Concerns
TP-Link, the well-known Chinese networking equipment manufacturer, is currently under scrutiny due to the potential risk to national security in its popular routers.
This rise in concerns has led U.S. entities to contemplate the prohibition of TP-Link internet routers. The increasing ties seen between the company's routers and multiple Chinese-conducted cyberattacks have caught the attention of investigators. Other U.S. departments involved in this investigation include Commerce, Defense, and Justice, as suggested by recent reports by The Wall Street Journal.
Potential Disrupting Ban on TP-Link Sales
Rumor is that the U.S. may introduce a TP-Link sales ban next year in response to the ongoing concerns. Any punitive measures against TP-Link would most likely be under the jurisdiction of the soon-to-be Trump administration.
TP-Link currently holds a significant foothold in the U.S. market, providing routers to approximately 65 percent of American homes and small businesses. Even federal government agencies, including the Defense Department, are seen using their internet solutions. The affordability of their routers aids the company's widespread consumer base. However, the U.S. Justice Department is investigating the company on the grounds of undercutting production costs, which could potentially infringe upon monopoly laws, as highlighted by The Wall Street Journal.
Ongoing Security Flaws & Company Response
Further concerns arise as TP-Link is frequent in receiving criticism for neglecting to address vulnerabilities in its devices. Microsoft, in recent revelations, mentioned a network made up largely of compromised devices produced by TP-Link that were continually victim to cyberattacks linked with the Chinese government.
In response to these allegations, an anonymous spokesperson for TP-Link's California-based business unit confirmed to The Wall Street Journal that the company is proactive in evaluating security risks and rectifying identified vulnerabilities. The spokesman conveyed TP-Link's willingness to work with the U.S. government in order to demonstrate their compliance with industry security standards, their ongoing commitment to the U.S. market and consumers, and in addressing national security threats.
