  1. In the United States, the principle of separating church and state has been a longstanding topic of discussion, and this extends to public education. The presence of religious references in government, such as the phrase 'in God we trust', can make it challenging to completely exclude religious elements from public institutions.

However, a key focus in public schools should be to foster an environment where students of all religious backgrounds feel welcome and are provided with an equitable educational experience. This includes ensuring that there is no discrimination based on religious beliefs or the lack thereof.

On the other hand, the role of religion in addressing moral and cultural issues is a broader societal matter. While some may argue that a decline in religious observance could impact morality, attributing cultural or moral challenges directly to the presence or absence of religious education in public schools oversimplifies the issue. Public schools are just one part of a larger societal framework, and the solution to such complex problems likely involves multiple facets of society, not solely the education system.

  2. Ending Cross-App Chat Integration

Meta has announced a significant change in its social media platforms: the discontinuation of the cross-platform chat feature that allows users to communicate between Instagram and Facebook Messenger. Starting mid-December, the integration that facilitated this connectivity will be removed, marking an end to the ability to initiate and engage in cross-app conversations. This change means that users will no longer be able to start new calls or chats with Facebook friends from Instagram and vice versa.

Implications for Current Conversations and User Experience

With the removal of this integration, current conversations between users of the two platforms will become read-only, and no new interactions will be initiated. Facebook accounts will lose the ability to view Instagram users' activity status or read receipts, and existing chats will not be transferred to inboxes on either platform. This marks a significant shift in the user experience for those who have become accustomed to the seamless connectivity between Instagram and Facebook Messenger, as they will now need to switch between apps for continued communication.

    Potential Reasons Behind the Decision

While Meta has not explicitly stated the reason for reversing this feature, speculation suggests it may be related to regulatory considerations. The European Union's Digital Markets Act, which seeks to prevent monopolistic practices by large tech companies and encourages interoperability between messaging platforms, could be a driving factor. Meta's decision to dismantle this specific cross-app chatting feature could be a strategic move to align with EU regulations and possibly lay the groundwork for broader interoperability that complies with these laws. The upcoming changes reflect Meta's ongoing adaptation to the evolving digital landscape and regulatory environment.

Well, we tried this a few years ago, and eventually gave up on it, because it proved too difficult to implement and raised too many privacy concerns.

I suspect this will end up going the same way. Age verification for adult content is a great idea, which I'd be 100% supportive of in theory - but in practice, every age verification method that's been proposed so far is either useless or invasive of privacy 😞

That is basically the issue I think most people have with this. The end goal is great and I think most people would agree that enforcing age limits on this content is for the best.

But stuff like this just seems very out of touch with the tech world and the problems it faces. The solution is incredibly easy for the tech-savvy youth to simply bypass or in an even worse case just avoid by going to an unregulated site, while being a massive privacy concern for the people that actually utilize it.

Not to mention the scams, I actually can't even imagine how bad people will be scammed if inputting banking and credit card information into sites becomes a norm. I mean there's a reason sites don't require this information until you're making a purchase and people still get scammed by the thousands, if not millions.

The only way I see this being a viable option, is the government actually producing their own login portal that these sites can access the API of to offer as a login method. It's not unreasonable as services like ID.me have done systems like this, but they need to provide the tools before they enforce the rules. It won't keep minors off the site, but at least it'll be a safer system for those that utilize it.

  4. The Illusion of Ownership in Digital Purchases

In today's digital age, the concept of owning media has transformed significantly. When consumers purchase digital media, such as movies, TV shows, or music, through platforms like iTunes, Google Play, or streaming services, they often believe they are buying these products. However, this is a common misconception. In reality, these digital purchases are more akin to renting, albeit under different terms. Unlike physical media, where the buyer owns the disk or file, digital purchases come with many restrictions. These limitations can include the inability to share, copy, or even retain access to the media indefinitely. The "buy" button on digital platforms often misleads consumers into thinking they possess the same ownership rights as they would with a physical copy, but in truth, they are subject to the terms and conditions set by the service providers.

The Impact of Licensing Agreements and DRM

Digital media is governed by licensing agreements and Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems. These agreements and systems control how the media can be used, often restricting the ability to transfer, copy, or sometimes even access the content. For instance, if a streaming service loses the rights to a movie or a TV show, even if a consumer has "purchased" it, they may no longer be able to watch it. Similarly, the closure of a digital platform could result in the loss of access to purchased media. This lack of control and permanence starkly contrasts with the ownership of physical media, where the buyer retains full control over the usage of their media.

Home Media Servers as an Alternative

For those seeking more control over their media, home media servers like Plex and Emby offer an alternative. These servers allow users to create their digital libraries by hosting media files on their personal devices. Users can curate collections of movies, music, TV shows, and more, which they can stream across their devices. Unlike traditional streaming services, the content on these servers is owned and controlled by the user, as long as they have legally obtained the media files. This approach provides a level of ownership and control akin to physical media, offering an escape from the restrictions of licensing agreements and DRM found in standard digital purchases. Home media servers are becoming increasingly popular for those who wish to truly own their digital media collection, mirroring the freedoms associated with physical media ownership.

  5. The new trailer for "Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire" has stirred up quite the debate in the community, and it's all about Godzilla... running! Yes, you read that right. In the latest footage, we see the iconic kaiju sprinting through a crystal-studded cavern, and it's got fans talking.

Traditionally, movies featuring colossal creatures like Godzilla and King Kong demand a certain suspension of disbelief from audiences. However, this new portrayal of Godzilla running has pushed the boundaries for some fans. The argument? Some say that the quick movements diminish the massive scale and weightiness that are characteristic of these legendary monsters. There's even a camp that feels the animation makes the apex predators look a bit goofy.

On the other hand, enthusiasts of the classic Japanese live-action Godzilla movies have come to the defense, citing instances where the "scaly big boy" has used various unique biological moves. Remember the tail-slide and double kick from the 1973 "Godzilla vs Megalon," or Godzilla's backward flying in "Godzilla vs Hedorah"?

This month, we had the chance to interview Adam Wingard, the director behind the upcoming movie and the 2021 hit "Godzilla vs Kong." Wingard shared some insights into the antagonist of the new movie, a "devilish Kong-type character," set to challenge both Godzilla and Kong in a way we haven't seen before.

So, what's your take on this?

    • Are you for or against a sprinting Godzilla?
    • Does it break the sense of realism in the kaiju world, or is it a welcome addition?
    • How do you feel about the direction Adam Wingard is taking with the new antagonist in "Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire"?
  6. Introduction of Age Verification Under the Online Safety Act

The UK's telecom regulator, Ofcom, is taking steps to implement age verification measures for online pornography services under the newly passed Online Safety Act. The act mandates that pornographic websites implement methods to prevent underage users from accessing their content. Ofcom has outlined several potential measures, including verification through banks or mobile networks, credit card checks, and uploading photo IDs like driver's licenses or passports. Another method under consideration is facial age estimation technology. The regulator is currently consulting on these guidelines and aims to finalize the official guidance within a year.

    Privacy Concerns and Technical Challenges

The move to implement age verification for online pornography has been met with privacy concerns and technical challenges. Critics, including digital rights campaigners, have raised alarms about the potential risks of sensitive personal data being breached, collected, shared, or sold. The privacy implications are significant, with fears of blackmail, fraud, and exposure of individuals' sexual preferences. Additionally, there is skepticism about the effectiveness of these measures, as they could easily be bypassed using VPNs. Ofcom acknowledges that no solution is foolproof but asserts that these measures are still valuable in preventing accidental exposure of adult content to children.

    Industry Response and Future Implementation

The response of pornographic content providers to the UK's age verification measures remains to be seen. Previous attempts by other jurisdictions to implement similar laws have seen varied responses from major industry players, with some complying and others restricting access in areas with strict age verification laws. Ofcom plans to consult further on rules for user-generated content, search engines, and social media sites in the coming year, with the aim of synchronizing these rules' implementation. The Online Safety Act carries significant penalties for non-compliance, including fines up to £18 million or 10 percent of global revenue, whichever is higher, emphasizing the seriousness of the UK government's commitment to online safety and child protection.

  7. Big news for Gundam fans! The second teaser for "Mobile Suit Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance" just dropped, revealing its global premiere plans on Netflix. This new animated project is adding an exciting chapter to the Gundam saga, and it's shaping up to be something special.

Directed by Erasmus Brosdau and produced by Sunrise and Safe House, what's particularly intriguing is that the animation for this six-episode series is being done in Unreal Engine 5. That's right, the same engine that's powering some of the latest and greatest video games is now bringing Gundam to life!

The series, penned by Gavin Hignight of "Tekken: Bloodline" fame, will dive into the One Year War, focusing on the European Front. With character designs by Manuel Augusto Dischinger Moura and mechanical design supervision by Kimitoshi Yamane, it's sure to be a visual feast. And leading the cast is Celia Massingham.

  8. Envisioning a New Chapter in the Fallout Universe

The creators of Prime Video's upcoming "Fallout" series are ambitiously positioning their show as a virtual "Fallout 5," offering a fresh installment in the iconic post-apocalyptic saga. Executive producer and showrunner Graham Wagner emphasized their intention to continue the series' tradition of exploring new territories in post-apocalyptic USA. Setting itself apart from the games, the show aims to introduce new narratives and characters while maintaining the essence that has made "Fallout" a beloved franchise. Rather than revisiting familiar locales like Boston or Washington, D.C., the series will unfold in Vault 33 and Los Angeles, adding a new dimension to the Fallout universe.

    Diverse Characters Offering Varied Perspectives

To replicate the open-world experience of the Fallout games, the series introduces three main characters: Lucy, portrayed by Ella Purnell; Maximus, played by Aaron Moten; and Walton Goggins as The Ghoul. Each character provides a unique perspective on the world. Lucy emerges from Vault 33, Maximus is a part of the Brotherhood of Steel, and The Ghoul, having lived for hundreds of years, offers insights from both before and after the catastrophic blast. This approach allows the series to mirror the role-playing aspect of the games, where players can shape their own journey through the choices they make.

    Storytelling Through Morality and Perspectives

Executive producer and director Jonathan Nolan highlighted the challenge of adapting the game’s role-playing elements into a linear storytelling format of TV. The solution was to narrate the story through multiple perspectives, thereby capturing the moral complexity and vast world-building of the games. The characters of Lucy, Maximus, and The Ghoul, each inhabiting different corners of the Fallout universe, allow the show to explore the broad scope of the game's moral dilemmas and gray areas. Nolan also mentioned "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" as a significant influence, underlining their vision of crafting a narrative that reflects the depth and nuances of the Fallout world.

  9. Sony's Move to Remove Discovery Shows from PlayStation Libraries

Sony has made a significant move that impacts PlayStation users who have purchased digital content, particularly TV shows produced by Discovery. In a report by Kotaku, Sony has announced that due to content licensing issues, numerous Discovery shows, including popular series like "Mythbusters" and "Naked and Afraid," will be removed from PlayStation users' libraries. This decision, irrespective of the users' purchase of the content, underscores the volatile nature of digital media ownership and the limitations imposed by online DRM and licensing agreements.

The Impacted Shows and User Reactions

The list of affected shows is extensive, reflecting Discovery's prolific production of reality TV and documentary-style content. Some of the notable series being removed include "Say Yes to the Dress," "Shark Week," "Cake Boss," and "Long Island Medium." This move has led to distress and frustration among PlayStation users, many of whom are now realizing the impermanent nature of digital ownership. Users have taken to online platforms like Reddit to express their concerns and seek solutions to preserve the content they believed they owned. A full list of shows can be found here: Playstation Video Content (US)

The Evolving Landscape of Digital Content on PlayStation

This incident highlights a broader issue in the digital media landscape, where content purchased online is often subject to the whims of licensing agreements and corporate decisions. Sony's move reflects a trend where content, even if bought, is essentially on loan and subject to removal. This issue isn't new to Sony but is part of an ongoing challenge in the digital content market. With the gradual shift away from physical media, like Blu-ray, and the introduction of new technologies like the PS5 slim with an online DRM check for its detachable disc drive, the stability and permanence of digital content ownership continue to be uncertain. This development poses challenges for consumers who prefer to own their media outright, as the availability and production of physical copies, especially for niche shows, diminish over time.

Feel free to check out our Home Media Servers forum to find out how to actually own your own purchased media.

  10. Expanding into Agriculture: A Significant Land Purchase

Popular streamer Amouranth, known for her presence on platforms like OnlyFans and Twitch, has made a significant leap into the real estate market with the acquisition of a $17 million orchard. The purchase encompasses a vast area of 2,213 acres spread across Florida and surrounding states, including four different sites. This move is part of her broader strategy to make long-term investments in land, with an option to further expand by acquiring an additional 928 acres. Her vision is not just to diversify her investment portfolio but also to potentially own more land than Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.

    Diversified Investments: Beyond Streaming

Amouranth's financial ventures extend well beyond her latest foray into agriculture. She has a highly profitable account on OnlyFans and has also invested in various other businesses, including gas stations, companies, and a beer brand. Her successful streaming career has also contributed significantly to her wealth, with earnings exceeding $1.4 million from August 2019 to October 2021, solely from streaming platforms. In June 2023, she made a noteworthy move by joining Kick, a deal speculated to be around $30 million, quickly becoming the platform's most popular female streamer.

The Challenge of Surpassing Bill Gates

While Amouranth's investments and business ventures have been successful, surpassing Bill Gates' wealth and land ownership is a formidable challenge. Gates, with an estimated net worth of $134 billion, is currently listed as the fourth-richest person in the world according to Bloomberg. His extensive agricultural holdings amount to 275,000 acres, setting a high bar for Amouranth's ambition to overtake his land ownership. Her journey in the realm of real estate and business investments, while impressive, highlights the sheer scale of Gates' wealth and assets.

Our file server, print server, domain controller, sql database, etc, are running some variant of Windows Server and they work perfectly fine. The ones that don't are running RHEL because the application it's providing can only be done on RHEL or CentOS.

This is actually what I was mostly talking about.  Windows Server still lacks a lot when compared directly to Linux in terms of applications and compatibility.  Windows server certainly has the capability and power to do it, but sometimes it just does not have the answer to do it.  Even with our home server, we run our home file cloud off our NAS as the offerings for Windows were basically none with only a few network-focused solutions that were pretty poor on mobile devices and such.  The other alternative was to run a VM with Linux for the files, but I can't exactly give Windows that win if it needs to run on a VM using a different OS.

Perhaps that is unfair to call that a "crack" in the OS as it is more a crack in the available software to run on the OS, but I can't really call it a perfect OS when it needs to run VMs to achieve the task when other offerings do not.  Ya, many people would rather split things up into VMs anyway, but I still can't avoid the lack of options at times.

Honestly, anyone that is angry that you use Windows as a server OS doesn’t actually know what they’re talking about. Servers running some version of Windows Server is incredibly common.

They're more than likely home enthusiasts and have no real world experience.

Ya, I can see some of the cracks in using Windows for multi million dollar data center, but for more home users and even most small scale business use, I don't have any issues with it at all.

  13. The much-awaited second season of "Halo," featuring the iconic Spartan hero Master Chief, is set to premiere globally on February 8th next year, with two episodes marking its debut. Paramount Plus announced this exciting news at CCXP in Brazil, accompanying it with a teaser trailer. While the trailer remains cryptic about the specific storylines, it has undoubtedly sparked excitement among fans of the franchise.

Season 2's Plot: A Quest Against the Covenant

In the upcoming season, Master Chief, portrayed by Pablo Schreiber, finds himself in a crucial mission to expose the Covenant's plans to attack Reach, a key human military stronghold. This storyline aligns with the narrative arc of the first "Halo" game, where Reach's fall is a significant event. The season is expected to delve into the Master Chief's quest to uncover the key to either humanity's salvation or its extinction, encapsulating the epic and grim essence familiar to the game's fans.

Cast and Expectations for the New Season

Season 2 of "Halo" will see the return of key cast members, including Natascha McElhone as Dr. Halsey and Jen Taylor as Cortana. Along with them, Bokeem Woodbine, Shabana Azmi, Natasha Culzac, Olive Gray, Yerin Ha, Bentley Kalu, Kate Kennedy, Charlie Murphy, and Danny Sapani are set to reprise their roles. New additions to the cast include Joseph Morgan as James Ackerson and Cristina Rodlo as Talia Perez. The first season, noted for its visual fidelity to the games and a gritty sci-fi feel, received mixed reviews, with many calling for a more lore-friendly story and tweaks in the overall presentation. With the new season, fans and newcomers to the series alike eagerly anticipate the direction the show will take, further exploring the rich universe of "Halo." For those who haven't caught up, Paramount Plus recently made the first season available for free viewing on YouTube.

  17. In a recent development reported by TechCrunch during the Epic versus Google trial, it was disclosed that Google has a special agreement with Spotify, allowing the audio streaming giant to avoid standard Play Store fees. This arrangement permits Spotify to process its own payments without incurring fees and pay only a 4% fee when Google handles the transactions. Additionally, both companies have reportedly invested $50 million each into a joint "success fund," a move that indicates a significant partnership beyond standard Play Store arrangements.

Google's Flexible Fee Structure and Strategic Partnerships

Google typically charges a 15% fee on subscription apps available in its Play Store. However, this fee can be reduced to 11% under certain programs like user choice billing, which offers developers the flexibility to use their own or third-party payment solutions. The tech giant’s spokesperson, Dan Jackson, highlighted that Google forms key investment partnerships with a small number of developers who significantly contribute to the Android and Play ecosystems. These partnerships, which involve substantial financial commitments and product integrations, aim to enhance user experiences and create new opportunities for developers across the platform.

Broader Trends in Google's Play Store Negotiations

The disclosure about Spotify's unique deal with Google sheds light on the tech giant's broader strategy in negotiating Play Store terms with major companies. For instance, Google reportedly offered Netflix a reduced 10% fee for Play Store subscriptions in 2017, though Netflix currently does not allow subscription purchases through its Android app. Google also reached a settlement with Match Group, allowing the dating app company to use third-party billing solutions on the Play Store. Additionally, Google's user choice billing program pilot, which includes companies like Bumble, reflects its evolving approach to accommodate major players in the app marketplace. However, not all companies have accepted Google's terms, as evidenced by Epic's decision to reject user choice billing offers and proceed with legal action. This trial continues to unveil the intricacies of Google Play Store's operations, including previously attempted multimillion-dollar deals with major gaming companies.
