  3. U.S. messaging giant Twilio confirmed it was hit by a second breach in June that saw cybercriminals access customer contact information. Confirmation of the second breach — carried out by the same “0ktapus” hackers that compromised Twilio again in August — was buried in an update to a lengthy incident report that Twilio concluded on Thursday. Twilio said the “brief security incident,” which occurred on June 29, saw the same attackers socially engineer an employee through voice phishing, a tactic whereby hackers make fraudulent phone calls impersonating the company’s IT department in an effort to trick employees into handing over sensitive information. In this case, the Twilio employee provided their corporate credentials, enabling the attacker to access customer contact information for a “limited number” of customers. “The threat actor’s access was identified and eradicated within 12 hours,” Twilio said in its update, adding that customers whose information was impacted by the June incident were notified on July 2. When asked by TechCrunch, Twilio spokesperson Laurelle Remzi declined to confirm the exact number of customers impacted by the June breach and declined to share a copy of the notice that the company claims to have sent to those affected. Remzi also declined to say why Twilio has only just disclosed the incident. Twilio also confirmed in its update that the hackers behind the August breach accessed the data of 209 customers, an increase from 163 customers it shared on August 24. Twilio has not named any of its impacted customers, but some — like encrypted messaging app Signal — have notified users that they were affected by Twilio’s breach. The attackers also compromised the accounts of 93 Authy users, Twilio’s two-factor authentication app it acquired in 2015. “There is no evidence that the malicious actors accessed Twilio customers’ console account credentials, authentication tokens, or API keys,” Twilio said about the attackers, which maintained access to Twilio’s internal environment for two days between August 7 and August 9, the company confirmed. The Twilio breach is part of a wider campaign from a threat actor tracked as “0ktapus,” which targeted at least 130 organizations, including Mailchimp and Cloudflare. But Cloudflare said the attackers failed to compromise its network after having their attempts blocked by phishing-resistant hardware security keys. As part of its efforts to mitigate the efficacy of similar attacks in the future, Twilio has announced that it will also roll out hardware security keys to all employees. Twilio declined to comment on its rollout timeline. The company says it also plans to implement additional layers of control within its VPN, remove and limit certain functionality within specific administrative tooling, and increase the refresh frequency of tokens for Okta-integrated applications. 4. Laura Normand / The Verge Elon Musk, Twitter’s new owner, says the company is setting up a council to make important moderation decisions at the company. In a tweet on Friday, Musk said the “council” will have “widely diverse viewpoints” and that “no major content decisions or account reinstatements will happen before that council convenes.” Part of Musk’s professed reasoning for buying Twitter hinged on making it a platform for “free speech,” and he has said he’d consider letting controversial figures like former president Donald Trump back onto the platform. With Friday’s announcement, it seems as if he’s placing that sort of decision into the hands of a council. Twitter will be forming a content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints. No major content decisions or account reinstatements will happen before that council convenes. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 28, 2022 The tweet doesn’t contain any details about what kind of viewpoints Musk is seeking to have on the council, how many people will be on it, how they'll be appointed, or how it’s different from the content moderation and policy teams that already exist at the company. However, Musk has made it clear that he doesn’t agree with how the platform’s existing moderation systems operate; when he took control of the company, he fired several execs, including policy chief Vijaya Gadde, whose decisions he publicly criticized in the run-up to him buying the company. Other social media companies have tried a seemingly similar approach — Meta has its oversight board, which is meant to be an independent organization that rules on Facebook’s platform and moderation decisions. However, critics have raised questions about how much power the board actually has to enforce its rulings. There’s also a web of potential legislation that could dictate how tech companies are able to moderate their platforms, which may limit what kind of moderation decisions Twitter and other platforms can make, regardless of what “free speech” ideals they’re aiming for. 5. The social platforms that power the creator economy might seem like they’re starting to slip. YouTube’s quarterly ad revenue declined 1.9% year over year, per Google parent company Alphabet’s quarterly earnings report this week. Overall, Alphabet missed analyst estimates, earning $69.1 billion in revenue, about a billion dollars less than expected. For many YouTubers, ad revenue is a significant source of income, with members of YouTube’s Partner Program earning 55% of ad revenue generated on their videos. So, a decline in ad revenue could be cause for alarm. Still, creator economy experts are prepared to weather the storm. Digital services that make their money through advertising have faced intense headwinds in recent quarters. Between the overall macroeconomic downturn, global uncertainty around the war in Ukraine and major changes to Apple’s iPhone software that makes it more difficult for advertisers to track users, social media platforms aren’t posting great numbers. Russia’s invasion has also introduced new policy complexity for social platforms, which have been forced to navigate a delicate geopolitical situation while also serving as essential news-gathering platforms over the course of the war. Google, Microsoft, Twitter, Snap and Meta all halted ad sales in Russia, and Russia blocked some of these apps and websites as well to block information about Ukraine. According to Amanda McLoughlin — CEO of Multitude Productions, an independent podcasting company, and longtime online creator — this decline in revenue is expected. “This is a really normal reaction by companies to any type of uncertainty in the world. Advertisers are overcorrecting to the specter of a recession by slashing budgets. If a recession actually hits, we’ll probably see ad spending bounce back faster than you’d expect. Uncertainty is much scarier than reality for companies,” McLoughlin told TechCrunch. “This just happened in early lockdown; ad spending disappeared in March, April and May of 2020, but rebounded once we settled into the new normal (economically).” Like YouTubers, podcasters leverage advertising to support their creative endeavors. McLoughlin had previously written in the Wall Street Journal that when much of the United States went into lockdown in March 2020, she fretted for the future of her company, as well as her 10 friends and collaborators who relied on their podcasts for income. She found that offering fan subscriptions was a more consistent source of income than advertising. “Direct audience support had always been part of the way we made our living, but I was stunned to see a surge in new Patreon supporters during those first few months of the pandemic,” McLoughlin wrote. “Even as so many of us were cutting back on expenses, there were dozens of people making supporting creators a new priority. Those supporters kept us going — and more than a year later, they are still here.” YouTube’s ad revenue stats do not include revenue from subscription services like YouTube Premium and YouTube TV. On YouTube Premium, subscribers can watch videos without ads. But YouTube shares some of the subscription fee with creators to compensate for any lost ad viewership. So, an increase in YouTube Premium subscribers could be a small factor in this decline in ad revenue. Jim Louderback, the former CEO of the YouTube-focused creator conference VidCon, pointed out some reasons for this less-than-stellar report in a LinkedIn post. He wrote, “The rise in short-form swipable viewing, led by TikTok, has eaten into time spent with YouTube’s traditional long-form content. Marketers are shifting dollars from Instagram and YouTube to TikTok — and Shorts isn’t ready yet to significantly arrest that.” YouTube Shorts, the company’s TikTok clone, is poised to give TikTok a run for its money, though. Next year, creators will be able to earn ad revenue on short form YouTube videos, an important step that TikTok has not yet taken. It’s a new way for short-form creators to make money, but it’s an opportunity for advertisers as well. A number of creator-focused startups like Spotter, Creative Juice and Jellysmack rely on YouTube ad revenue as part of their own business models, which help expand creator businesses. Jellysmack president Sean Atkins isn’t too concerned about YouTube’s ad revenue decline either. “Cyclical moves in advertising might cause short-term discomfort, but the underlying opportunity for YouTube and creators will have staying power far beyond the near-term economic challenges,” Atkins told TechCrunch via email. “We’ll also see savvy creators, who have invested in multiple platforms beyond YouTube, finding advantages during this period with diversified revenue streams.” McLoughlin agrees, pointing to this moment as a reminder for creators to never rely too heavily on one platform to pay the bills. “This should be another reminder for creators to diversify your revenue streams and allow your audiences to support you directly,” she said. “People have much better judgment than companies, and your audience will come through when ad dollars don’t.” YouTube Shorts could steal TikTok’s thunder with a better deal for creators YouTube’s ad revenue is declining, but creator economy experts aren’t worried by Amanda Silberling originally published on TechCrunch View the full article
  6. Snapchat has changed the way it pays creators through its Spotlight reward fund. Creators that use Snapchat’s TikTok clone, Spotlight, will now be paid millions per year, a source familiar with the matter told TechCrunch. Business Insider was the first to report the change. This marks the second time Snapchat has reduced the payout. In 2021, the company rewarded creators millions per week, down from $1 million a day in 2020. While Snapchat is lowering the amount, the source noted to TechCrunch that it’s paying more creators in more markets. It’s also important to note that the minimum payout per Spotlight will remain at $250. Last year, Snapchat paid $250 million to over 12,000 creators. They also pointed to other ways Snapchat creators earn a profit, including the Creator Marketplace, Sound Creator Fund, its accelerator program for black creators, Spotlight Challenges and in-app gifting. In February, the app tested revenue sharing on ads in Snapchat stories for Snap Stars. Snapchat recently announced it’s awarding a total of $100,000 across 12 Spotlight Challenges for Halloween. The move to lower fund spending for Spotlight was likely made as another way to boost profit and spend less of its revenue. Earlier this year, CEO Evan Spiegel announced that Snapchat was testing ads on the Spotlight. In August, Snapchat downsized its workforce by 20%. Last week, Snapchat reported its Q3 results, missing analyst expectations on revenue. The company still did relatively well, earning $1.13 billion, an increase of 6% for the quarter. However, Snapchat’s net loss rose to $360 million. On a more positive note, the company said Spotlight performed well this quarter and helped increase the overall total time spent watching content. 7. Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Intel has confirmed that it will lay off workers soon as part of its plan to cut billions of dollars in spending. The announcement comes after reports that Intel is planning on cutting thousands of jobs. As part of its Q3 earnings, the company announced plans to cut around $3 billion in costs over the course of next year, and CEO Pat Gelsinger told Reuters that part of that would come from “people costs.” He also confirmed the job cuts to Bloomberg and added that the company was reducing factory work hours for some employees. By the end of 2025, the company hopes to have cut its costs by $8 to $10 billion a year. Intel is faced with an industry-wide shift in semiconductor availability as the pandemic shortages give way to overproduction in certain segments — a problem also affecting competitors AMD and Nvidia. “The chip industry is changing from that of shortage to surplus (by early 2023) across a number of devices. This will negatively impact revenues across the chip industry (at least in most cases), and typically, these situations call for re-evaluation of cost and margins,” said Gartner analyst Gaurav Gupta in an email to The Verge. The company didn’t immediately reply to The Verge’s request for details on the number of workers that it expects to lay off and what departments will be hit. Bloomberg has previously reported that Intel’s sales and marketing teams could see the biggest cuts. In his Reuters interview, Gelsinger did say that Intel’s people costs were a relatively small part of its overall spending, so the company is more focused on its factories and fabs as places to save money. The company is currently in the process of building a facility in Ohio, which it broke ground on earlier this year, and has committed at least $20 billion to the project. In terms of its earnings, the company has made it out of the red — in Q2, it lost half a billion dollars, and this quarter, it reported a billion dollars in profits. That number is, however, down 85 percent compared to Q3 2021, which made up part of Intel’s best financial year ever. Additional reporting by Umar Shakir View the full article
  8. YouTube is rolling out a change impacting how videos appear on its platform. The company today announced a redesign that now splits video content into three different tabs on all channel pages — one for YouTube’s traditional long-form content, another for YouTube Shorts only and a third for Live videos, including past, current and upcoming livestreams. The changes will allow users to more easily access the types of YouTube videos they want to watch — a move YouTube says it made based on user feedback. In an announcement, the company said it heard from viewers they wanted to be able to navigate to the kinds of content they were most interested in when exploring a creator’s channel page, leading to this makeover. you heard correctly we're beginning to roll out Videos, Shorts, and Live tabs so you can easily explore these different kinds of content on YouTube more info here: https://t.co/BaXQnQVUcR https://t.co/8XCdpr7HAH — TeamYouTube (@TeamYouTube) October 27, 2022 The update also means that Shorts content and Live streams will no longer be found in the main Videos tab on the channel page — something that could appeal to longtime YouTube viewers who haven’t appreciated the infiltration of YouTube’s short-form content into their favorite channel’s video feed in recent months. However, for those who do like watching Shorts, the redesign gives YouTube a way to direct them to more short-form videos. Now, when users are watching Shorts videos in the Shorts feed in the main YouTube app, then navigate to the creator’s channel, they’ll be sent directly into this new Shorts tab to watch even more Shorts content. This could help YouTube boost its views for Shorts as those users will no longer be immediately lost to the creator’s long-form content, as before. Initial feedback from users on Twitter responding to YouTube’s post about the changes has been positive, as users are expressing their appreciation for giving each type of content its own separate category. Image Credits: YouTube The redesign follows another major update to YouTube this month which introduced, at long last, YouTube handles in the @username format. These usernames will now allow creators to identify their channel and interact with their viewers across YouTube Shorts, channel pages, in video descriptions, in comments and more. YouTube says the tabbed redesign is rolling out starting today and will be available to all users across all devices in the weeks ahead. 9. Elon Musk fired key Twitter executives Thursday, one of his first moves as the official owner of the social media platform. According to reports from the New York Times, CNBC, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and other outlets, Musk fired CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal, general counsel Sean Edgett, and head of legal policy, trust and safety Vijaya Gadde. The deal is done, according to multiple sources, which is what gave Musk the mandate to clean house among the executive ranks. The Tesla CEO had previously criticized Gadde on his Twitter account, since she was involved in the decision to ban former President Donald Trump from the platform. He has also tangled with Agrawal. Publicly, Musk tweeted poop emojis at the CEO, who took over for founder Jack Dorsey late last year. It wasn’t much better in private, either. The two exchanged text messages that indicated a falling out, as revealed by chat logs disclosed in discovery in the legal battle between the billionaire and the social network. Musk was rumored to say that he wants to cut 75% of Twitter’s staff, though he then backtracked that statement — still, gutting four execs on a Thursday night isn’t reassuring to the remaining Twitter employees. Even Twitter co-founder Biz Stone addressed the shake-up. Thank you to @paraga, @vijaya, and @nedsegal for the collective contribution to Twitter. Massive talents, all, and beautiful humans each! — Biz Stone (@biz) October 28, 2022 Twitter has already had quite the shuffling of executive staff since Agrawal took over for Dorsey. Before serving as CEO, Agrawal was the company’s CTO — he first started at Twitter in 2011. But within a few weeks, two executives stepped down as part of Agrawal’s restructuring: Twitter’s Chief Design Officer Dantley Davis, who joined the company in 2019, and Head of Engineering Michael Montano, who joined in 2011. Shortly after, Twitter lost two more leaders, chief information security officer, Rinki Sethi, and head of Security, Peiter Zatko (Mudge). In May, Twitter GM of Consumer, Keyvon Beykpour, announced he would be leaving the company after seven years after Agrawal asked him to step down. At the same time, Bruce Falck, Twitter’s revenue product lead, also left the company. Twitter’s leadership is already going to look a lot different under Musk’s control, and this is only the very beginning. 10. Image: Getty Images Toward the end of Meta’s earnings call on Wednesday discussing the company’s results for Q3 2022, CEO Mark Zuckerberg took a moment to address his metaverse doubters. “Look, I get that a lot of people might disagree with this investment, but from what I can tell, I think this is going to be a very important thing,” he said. “People will look back a decade from now and talk about the importance of the work being done here.” “People will look back a decade from now and talk about the importance of the work being done here” The problem is that a decade is a long time from now. And as Zuckerberg experienced on today’s earnings call, he is losing faithful supporters quickly. “I think kind of summing up how investors are feeling right now is that there are just too many experimental bets versus proven bets,” one Wall Street analyst said on the call. The numbers are staggering (PDF): Meta’s Reality Labs division lost $3.7 billion this last quarter and $9.4 billion this year so far. It made only $285 million in revenue for the quarter, a nearly 50 percent drop attributed primarily to weaker sales of the Quest 2 headset that got a $100 price hike in August. The next version of that headset is currently planned for release in the second half of next year, and Meta just released its Quest Pro this week, a pricier $1,499 version marketed for work use cases. Mark Zuckerberg on the Quest Pro, future of the metaverse, and more “We do anticipate that Reality Labs operating losses in 2023 will grow significantly year-over-year,” Meta said in its earnings press release, just a few days after a large shareholder publicly pressured the company to reign in its spending. Meta’s stock dropped a staggering 20 percent today after it reported a 4 percent drop in revenue growth. The results show Apple’s ad tracking prompt has cost it over $10 billion, advertising spending on its platform is continuing to weaken, and its stock is currently trading at a price not seen since the end of 2015. Zuckerberg tried to give investors reasons to be bullish today. He said there are more daily users on Facebook than ever before. Instagram and WhatsApp both have over 2 billion users, with the latter just starting a significant marketing push in the US that takes aim directly at iMessage. Even the company’s TikTok competitor, Reels, is starting to grow dramatically, with Zuckerberg saying, “we believe we are gaining time spent share on competitors like TikTok.” That may be true, and this could be another painful moment of transition akin to Facebook’s shift from desktop to mobile or the introduction of Stories like Zuckerberg suggested. But for now, he is experiencing a crisis of confidence. View the full article
  11. Other unspecified categories of apps have also been paused. | Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Apple has “paused ads related to gambling and a few other categories on App Store product pages” after developers and commentators criticized the types of advertisements showing up in the iPhone’s App Store, according to a statement from spokesperson Trevor Kincaid. On Tuesday, Apple announced that companies could advertise their apps on the store pages for other apps, putting their icon in the “you might also like” section. Almost immediately, developers started showing examples of ads for gambling apps being recommended under their apps. Twitter is also full of screenshots of very inappropriate ad placements: one Twitter user shows a slot machine app being advertised alongside gambling addiction recovery apps, and there are examples of other betting apps being advertised on pages for apps aimed towards children, adult video chat apps showing up on the Apple Books page, and dating apps being placed under apps designed to improve existing relationships. Apple has no additional information to share at this time, so it's unclear how long the pause will last/what changes might be made/etc. — Joe Rossignol (@rsgnl) October 26, 2022 As MacRumors reporter Joe Rossignol points out, Apple hasn’t clarified how long the pause would last, or if it’ll be making any policy changes based on how the initial rollout has gone down. It’s also unclear which other ad categories have been paused. Apple’s rules for advertising on the App Store do list apps related to gambling, alcohol, dating, and the pharmaceutical and medical industry as “restricted,” meaning that there are special rules about where they can be shown. The limitations are mainly about laws instead of what’s tasteful or potentially harmful though; the site says gambling apps are “prohibited or limited in some countries and regions,” but doesn’t say anything about the audience they can be served to. How Apple proceeds could be very important for the future of the iPhone. Reports have indicated that it’s planning on expanding ads outside the App Store, to apps like Maps, Podcasts, and Books. Imagine seeing a casino pop up when you search for addiction recovery centers, or erotic novels when you’re looking for books on dealing with a porn addiction. The good news for Apple is that there are other companies that have been working on this problem that it can borrow ideas from, if it’s not too proud to do so. Google, for example, lets you limit the number of ads you see about potentially sensitive topics like alcohol, gambling, dating, pregnancy, and weight loss. Apple talks a big game about how the App Store is a safe place to get software for your phone, and (despite the many ways it’s historically failed to prove that) it needs to maintain that appearance. But can it do that while also trying to show us ads whenever we open its apps? View the full article

  25. Independence Day is a holiday in the United States, although many nations have a holiday where they celebrate independence from another nation, to celebrate America’s independence from Great Britain and the creation of the United States. The holiday is often called The Fourth of July and is set on the day when the Declaration of Independence was published declaring independence from Great Britain in 1776. The Revolutionary War began on April 19, 1775, when the New England states began fighting British forces over their objection to Parliament's taxation policies and lack of colonial representation. As the war expanded, the national congress of the 13 colonies voted in secret to declare independence from Great Britain, and on July 4th, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed. As one would expect when fighting the British at this time (the world’s most successful military power), the United States struggled to claim its independence via a military campaign. However, on October 19, 1781, the British would surrender during the Siege of Yorktown and the fighting would come to an end in the colonies. Thanks to America’s ally, the French, and a massive resolve to become independent, the United States would be formed as a nation. September 3, 1783, made the British surrender official as both sides signed the Treaty of Paris and the United States could officially call themselves a free nation. Today the holiday is celebrated through picnics, BBQs, festivals, and of course fireworks. View full record Read on Uncrowned Empire
