  1. Microsoft is getting into the “games streaming business”. Updates will include streaming apps for Samsung smart TVs. Reports stated that Microsoft devices will be able to not only stream games through Xbox but will also include movies and television shows as well. Samsung smart TVs will be getting Xbox streaming apps for their sets, kind of like streaming sticks, and will be released in the next 12 months. Phil Spenser noted that the gaming landscape was changing, and gaming consoles are the foremost popular, including more devices like the Samsung TV. It’s going to change the way we think about gaming. "At Xbox, we want to deliver a world where you have more freedom and choice to play the games you want, with the people you want, on the devices you want. A world where you can play without boundaries. A world beyond generations," said Phil Spenser. Xbox Cloud Gaming recently added Fortnite to their services available to play on IOS, Android, and PC for free.
  2. Amazon has updated its software disabling the ability to buy the ebook in the Kindle app for Android. When you attempt to buy digital books, a new screen is displayed, and because Google has changed its policies, buying ebooks is no longer supported. Google updated its software and mandated that all apps use their billing system, thus resulting in a 30% cut out of each transaction. Amazon is the largest ebook seller in the world. The 30% cut would be detrimental to the bottom line for Amazon. Amazon joins Audible Barnes and Noble in ceasing the sell audiobooks and ebooks in their apps. Initially, Amazon pulled the ability to buy digital books in their app back in 2011, when Apple implemented a similar policy, forcing companies to use their billing system. Apple users are more affluent and buy the most content. Amazon attempted to skirt around the policy by developing the Kindle Cloud Reader, designed to work with Safari and allow people access to the books right in the browser. In 2021 Google announced that they would start mandating that all apps have to use their billing system by June 1, 2022. Resulting in Google removing apps that didn’t comply with the new policies. Due to “Agency Pricing” the operators of the bookstore, is acting as an agent for the publisher. Major publishers set the prices of an ebook and all retailers have to sell at a specific price. The purpose of “agency pricing” is the level the playing field so nobody has a price advantage in the market. If Amazon agreed to pay Google, 30% of each book sold, they would take such a massive loss on every single title, that it ended up disabling all in-app purchases. This has rendered your Kindle useless for the purchase of ebooks. You have to keep your Amazon Acct, log in via computer or mobile internet browser, find a book, buy it, and then open your Kindle app and sync the purchase. Making the purchase of ebooks all the more tedious.
  3. ACCORDING TO A STATEMENT PUBLISHED THIS PAST FRIDAY, Texas A & M University School of Public Health has a new study finding that resiliency via employee and company is enhanced through remote work. Natural Disasters and the recent pandemic have led to a lot of employees working from home remotely. This particular study included data before, during, and after Hurricane Harvey. Total Computer usage declined during the Hurricane but swiftly returned to normal not seven months after the hurricane hit. Marx Benden the director of the school’s Ergonomics Center is quoted as “In the future, there will be a greater percentage of the workforce who is involved in some sort of office-style technology work activities” “Almost all of the study’s employees were right back up to the same level of output as they were doing before Hurricane Harvey. This is a huge message right now for employers because we’re having national debates about whether or not employees should be able to work remotely or in a hybrid schedule.” The study also suggested that working from home, encourages more frequent breaks to recharge, making working from the homeless likely to result in work-related accidents and better turnaround time with projects.
  4. This spring will be exciting for the gaming community in the Central Susquehanna area. Five area schools, including Danville, Southern Columbia, Shamokin, Warrior Run, and Montgomery area will have the opportunity to join an “Esports” Gaming League. “Rocket League” or Soccer with cars, will be the first game of the spring in the new league. Jeffrey Ryan the district’s director of information technology states that participants can compete in their own homes, utilizing their computers and gaming equipment. Between 15-and 20 students have signed, including 10 from Southern Columbia alone to compete. The league included about an hour and a half of practice every week. Practicing defensive and offensive moves, and working together as a team to come up with the highest score. Students log onto the Discord server to participate in the league and can communicate online with each other. A championship tournament will be held in May.
  5. The Federal Communications Commission on Friday determined that security products from Kaspersky posed an “unacceptable risk” to US national security and added the company to a covered list of other firms not eligible for FCC funds. Huawei and ZTE landed on this particular list in 2021. Eugene Kaspersky, after he attended a KGB-Technical College, having ties to Russian military intelligence, and even having a headquarters based in Moscow, was deemed a threat by the FCC. Kaspersky is already banned from US Government Networks. “I am pleased that our national security agencies agreed with my assessment that China Mobile and China Telecom appeared to meet the threshold necessary to add these entities to our list,” FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr stated. Kaspersky becomes the first security company and first Russian entity to be added to the US security threat list. Companies that appear on the list are ineligible to receive any of the $8 billion available annually under the FCC's Universal Service Fund. The fund supports Telecomm services in rural areas or for low-income consumers or entities like schools, libraries, and hospitals. Ten days ago, Germany's Federal Office for Information Security, warned companies not to use Kaspersky products. Officials hinted that there is a possibility for the company to be coerced into assisting Russian intelligence services. The addition comes a month after Russian military forces invaded neighboring Ukraine and indiscriminately unleashed a continuing stream of bombs and other munitions on civilians. Eugene Kaspersky has said denies any connections to the Kremlin. Image: gguy - stock.adobe.com View full article
