What do you think of breakfast in bed?

Not something I've ever done, although I don't have anything against those who do it! Not like it's harming anybody 😛

  2. Well, it helps if we start by defining "bullying". I put the word into Google, and the first definition I got was this one, from acas.org.uk:

    Quote

Although there is no legal definition of bullying, it can be described as unwanted behaviour from a person or group that is either:

    • offensive, intimidating, malicious or insulting
    • an abuse or misuse of power that undermines, humiliates, or causes physical or emotional harm to someone

So, does anybody deserve this behaviour? I wouldn't say so... there are situations where the victim is perhaps doing something to provoke the bullies, but even then, I think bullying is a poor way of handling the situation. There's usually some authority figure (whether it's a teacher at school; a boss at work; an admin on a website; or, in extreme cases, the police) who can handle it better.

Usually, about 3 years. I had been hoping my current one would last a bit longer, since it cosy almost twice as much as my previous one - but at 3.5 years old, it's already getting rather rickety...

Well, my rickety computer lasted for less than a month after I posted this!

The replacement is, therefore, nearly a year old now - and I am rather hoping it'll last longer...

What do you think of eavesdropping? Do you do it?

No, I don't - for the simple reason that I respect other people's privacy.

  6. I don't think rolling back human rights is a sustainable long-term solution at all.

I will grant that governments can legitimately exercise emergency powers in an emergency - but, if they make this permanent, they'll just create more resentment, and make it easier for the criminal gangs to recruit new members (by releasing propaganda presenting themselves as "liberating the country from an oppressive government").

Also, there needs to be a realistic endgame here - and all rights need to be restored when that endgame is reached. Otherwise, the risk is that they'll fall into the dilemma of "Either the restrictions work (in which case the government says it's too dangerous to lift them and they must be maintained), or they don't work (in which case the government argues that more restrictions are needed)".

Are you into anime & manga then?

I used to be into anime, but I haven't watched very much for the past 20 years.

Manga... I've never been into 😛

Have your ever disliked something & then changed your mind?

    Yeah, Digimon.

At first, I thought it was a cheap rip-off of Pokémon. Then, I gave it a chance - and discovered that, despite the similar premise, it was a very different series, and I was able to enjoy it for what it was!

  9. On the one hand, the popularity of a given view has no bearing on whether it's right or wrong: to argue that it does is a logical fallacy.

On the other hand, there's often a reason why extremely unpopular views are so unpopular. Sometimes, it'll be due to a lack of supporting evidence, or a large amount of contrary evidence... naturally, such views are more likely to be wrong than popular views whose popularity comes from a large body of supporting evidence.

  10. While I previously said I would stop using them if forced to pay for the basic service itself, I don't mind the concept of paying for extras. Ad revenue isn't exactly reliable when many people have ad blockers, and people don't want their data being sold, so... this is probably a more reliable alternative, assuming they have something worth selling!

Still, I probably won't buy any of them, since I don't use social media enough myself.

  11. Well, we tried this a few years ago, and eventually gave up on it, because it proved too difficult to implement and raised too many privacy concerns.

I suspect this will end up going the same way. Age verification for adult content is a great idea, which I'd be 100% supportive of in theory - but in practice, every age verification method that's been proposed so far is either useless or invasive of privacy 😞
